The NFL Competition Committee’s ongoing efforts to protect players from unnecessary risk of injury, will lead to an expanded role for the league’s independent certified athletic trainers (ATC spotters) in 2015.

Since 2012, ATC spotters have served as another set of eyes, watching for potential injuries from the press box to make sure that any player who needs medical attention receives it.

Beginning in 2015, all preseason, regular season and postseason games, ATC spotter can now — in very specific situations — stop play using the league’s new medical timeout.
