Testing, Screening & Treatment

How Will Testing Work?

Testing is critical — but it’s only one component of a comprehensive effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Players were required to pass three COVID-19 tests administered within a four-day period prior to entering the club facility. After that, players will get tested every day for the first two weeks of training camp. If, after the first two weeks of daily testing, the positive test rate is below five percent for all club personnel, then testing will move to every other day. All protocols will be updated as science evolves.

Each club facility will have a designated testing site with:

  • PCR test for COVID-19 virus conducted by nasal swab
  • Antibody test for COVID-19 antibodies conducted by blood sample

What Does the Screening Process Look Like?

There will be daily symptom screening and temperature checks for everyone entering the facility. Players will be asked screening questions, including:

  • In the past 48 hours, have you experienced any of the symptoms of COVID-19?
  • Have you had a fever greater than 100.4 degrees or taken any fever-reducing medications (Tylenol or Advil) in the last 48 hours?
  • Have you, or anyone with whom you’ve had close contact, been exposed to COVID-19 in the past 14 days?
  • Have you spent time in any countries outside of the United States in the past 30 days?

What If a Player Has Symptoms?

Any player or employee who believes they have symptoms should immediately notify the Head Team Physician and/or Head Athletic Trainer and self-isolate. Players or employees who report or exhibit COVID-19 symptoms cannot enter the club facility.

If a player or employee developed symptoms for the first time while inside the club facility, they must:

  • Immediately isolate in a separate room
  • Continue to wear a mask
  • Be transported and quarantined at home ASAP

If a Player Tests Positive, When Can He Return to The Facility?

Following a positive test, if the player is asymptomatic, he can return once:

  • 10 days have passed since the initial positive test; OR
  • Five days have passed since the initial positive test and the player receives two consecutive negative PCR virus tests at least 24 hours apart within that five-day period

Following a positive test, if the player demonstrates symptoms, he can return once:

  • At least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared; AND
  • At least 72 hours have passed since he last experienced symptoms

All players must get clearance from the club’s Head Physician in both cases.

If a Player Tests Positive, When Can He Return To Play?

Players who have tested positive and recovered, or who have tested positive for antibodies, will undergo additional cardiac screening.

  • Following a mild, symptomatic infection, a player must complete at least a three-day progressive exercise protocol under the supervision of the team medical staff with appropriate clinical monitoring.
  • Following a moderate to severe infection, a player must complete a progressive exercise protocol for a recommended seven days or for a period equal to twice the duration of the hospitalization.

How Will Contact Tracing Work?

Contact tracing will be conducted by a third party, IQVIA, and be implemented after an infected player receives a positive test result to identify any employees and players who came in close contact with that person.

Clubs will notify the proper health authorities of any positive tests as required by applicable local regulations or laws. Kinexon Proximity Recording player tracking devices will be used to identify in-game close contacts, and the devices must be worn during all team activities (e.g. facility, practice, team travel).
