The 2016 NFL roster of 124 game officials includes three first-year officials.

Side judge Alan Eck (Big 12), umpire Ramon George (Conference USA) and head linesman Jerod Phillips (Big 12) will make their NFL officiating debuts this season.

All 17 referees from 2015 will return for 2016, led by the dean of NFL officials, Walt Coleman, who returns for his 28th season. Each referee will lead a seven-person on-field officiating crew.

During the season, officials will rotate among the crews to ensure the most consistent officiating across the league. Another five officials will work as swing officials, working with different crews throughout the season.

Three sets of fathers and sons are included among the roster of officials: Coleman and his son, Walt IV; Ed Hochuli and his son, Shawn; and Steve Freeman and his son, Brad.

Steve Freeman and Phil McKinnely are the only current game officials to have played in the NFL. Freeman played 13 seasons (1975-86) with the Buffalo Bills, and McKinnely played seven seasons (1976-82), including five seasons with the Atlanta Falcons from 1976-80.
