NFL Football Operations’ mission is to ensure that NFL football is the greatest competitive sport in the world. The league fulfills that mission, in part, by exploring and embracing innovations that move the game forward.
Innovation is a collaborative process. That’s why the NFL values an environment where the NFL and its partners can collaborate to implement creative solutions that address the priorities of the Future of Football Committee.
The Future of Football Committee is designed to identify opportunities, spark discussion and provide feedback on key technology and innovative solutions within the football ecosystem.
What is the Future of Football Committee?
The Future of Football Committee explores innovative ways to integrate technology to improve play on the field — from preventing unnecessary risk and sharing tracking data, to delivering game information to players, coaches and officials, to improving pace of play, to making the game more competitive.
The Committee meets regularly to define priorities and review the progress of research and development. The members also evaluate ways to further innovate technology that already exists, and to explore new technologies to improve the game.
The Committee’s work reflects the collaboration required between the league and all 32 teams to make the game of football better for players, coaches, media, and fans.
The Future of Football Committee members are:
- Paraag Marathe (Co-Chair): President of San Francisco 49ers Enterprises and Executive Vice President of Football Operations, San Francisco 49ers
- John Spanos (Co-Chair): President of Football Operations, Los Angeles Chargers

Through the NFL’s Innovative Ideas blog, fans can gain access to the behind-the-scenes process of generating new ideas to improve the game. These ideas serve to advance and highlight innovations across the league.
The NFL’s Football Operations Innovation Team is always looking for creative ideas. The NFL Forward Crowdsourcing Platform allows anyone to submit proposals that offer creative ideas to advance the game. Submissions will be evaluated on how well they address the Future of Football Committee's challenges. The best ideas may lead to a chance to work with the NFL to bring such ideas to life.
Innovation is about progress and improvement; principles that the NFL stands by.
